La Frontera: Artists Along The Us Mexican Border

Photographer Monica Lozano in Ciudad Juarez.
Her artist statement: “The Juarez 3.11 series is about human condition in a poignant place, in a difficult time. Interrogating on the theme of survival, these stories are a testament of courage. The series consists of environmental portraits of people living in Ciudad Juarez and what they do in their daily life. The element of the mask comes from the mexican culture and the day of the death celebration and is used to cover their identity.”

Q: What is the essence of your life as a border artist?

A: “My eye is my voice. I am constantly seeking beauty and light even in the darkest places, this is what defines my work as a border artist.”

Monica Lozano also brought the Insight Out Project (http://www.insideoutproject.net) to Juarez.
